The auction chant in the United States This paper proposes a multimodal prosodic analysis of the auction chant that is practiced in the US. Drawing upon a corpus that involves 6 auctioneers and relying upon the prosodic analysis of the chant by Kuiper, K. & Tillis F. (1985), we investigate how gestures, which are necessary in this type of interaction, align with speech despite a fast speech rate and the fact that verbal content is strongly constrained by the rhythmic structure of the chant.
